After purchasing a lottery ticket from a California lottery machine, a Walmart employee who was called in to work on her day off became a billionaire.
Rebeca Gonzalez, a Walmart employee in Los Angeles County, received a last-minute request to come in. In a press release on Tuesday, the California Lottery acknowledged that she wasn’t anticipating it.
“It was Labor Day and they only needed me for three hours,” Gonzalez stated. “I wanted to obviously be home with my family because we planned to barbecue.”
That three-hour workday got in the way of her original intentions to purchase a Single Double Triple Scratchers game from a California Lottery vending machine.
She recalled buying $10 on a ticket when she passed the California Lottery machine on her way out for the evening. She took home the top reward of $1 million.
Regarding her winnings, she remarked, “I couldn’t believe it.”
According to lottery authorities, Walmart will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling Gonzalez her ticket. According to the lottery, Gonzalez will now be able to pay off all of her debt and close on a new house with her spouse.

A representative for the California Lottery stated that all 212 Walmart Supercenters in California, as well as several Walmart neighborhood markets, have lottery machines.
Gonzales stated that although she is happy to have some more money, she will continue to work at Walmart.
“I’ve only told one person at work, and it was the manager who wanted me to stay late on a holiday,” Gonzalez told to lottery officials. “He couldn’t believe it.”
