Two five-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, were found dead in their Bronx apartment on Monday morning, according to police and law enforcement sources. It’s unclear how the siblings died, as there were no apparent signs of injury.
The distressed mother informed the police that she had put the children to bed so she could take a shower. When she returned, she discovered their lifeless bodies on the living room floor.
The children were cold to the touch and stiff. The mother, overwhelmed with grief, had to be taken to BronxCare Health System for observation.
The father, who was at work when the incident occurred, rushed home upon learning about the tragic event.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workers arrived at the scene around 11:20 a.m. and pronounced the twins dead. The investigation into the cause of their death is ongoing.
The commanding officer of the Patrol Borough Bronx, NYPD Assistant Chief Benjamin Gurley, told reporters on Monday afternoon, “At this time, we do not know if there is any foul play, being that the investigation is very fresh.”
“We have the Medical Examiner and Crime Scene Unit upstairs waiting to process the crime scene as we get a search warrant.”
Both kids were unwell for a few days and were sent home from school last week. Gurley and sources say they were sick on Monday.
The family has no history of domestic violence with the NYPD or any issues with the city’s Administration for Children’s Services, according to Gurley.
The FDNY checked the air quality in the building and confirmed that carbon monoxide poisoning wasn’t the cause of the kids’ deaths, as per the police official.
The official cause of death will be determined by the city medical examiner’s office, as stated by the NYPD.
