The purpose of this legislation, HB 4911, which was enacted by the Illinois legislature in the summer, is to make it easier for people all around the state to terminate their membership.
Under the terms of this new law, citizens of Illinois who are gym members will no longer have to cancel their memberships in person or by mailing a cancellation request, as was previously frequently necessary.
Rather, the law mandates that gym patrons be provided with the ability to terminate their memberships online, either through the gym’s website or by sending an email.
It is anticipated that this modification will lessen the difficulties and obstacles related to terminating memberships, resulting in a quicker and less stressful procedure for gym patrons.
Senator Javier Cervantes of Illinois State, who backed the bill, emphasized that it aims to alleviate consumer annoyance with antiquated and cumbersome cancellation procedures.
The system’s modernization guarantees that gym patrons can terminate their memberships at any time, from the convenience of their homes, without encountering needless obstacles.
This program is a reflection of larger state-level initiatives to strengthen consumer safeguards and get rid of exploitative tactics that are frequently connected to subscription-based services. It is anticipated that the new law would help many Illinoisans who want to cancel gym memberships they no longer need or use without having to deal with awkward cancellation processes.
“This will prevent automatically renewing payments from sticking with consumers after they have moved and may no longer use the service,” he stated in a press release. “We want to modernize business practices and give residents an easier way to cancel their gym subscriptions.”
According to the office of Cervantes, the measure also codified standards that require gyms to adhere to the provisions of the Automatic Contract Renewal statute. This statute assures that there is more openness with services that incorporate automatic renewal.
