In a recent study that looked at the frequency of sexually transmitted illnesses among the major 100 cities in the United States, it was found that Jacksonville has the highest rate of STIs in the entire state of Florida.
On the list, Jacksonville was one of three cities in Florida that made it into the top 25. The River City came in as number 16, while Miami followed close after at number 17. Fort Lauderdale was ranked No. 19.
According to the findings of the Innerbody research conducted on Jacksonville in 2021, the total infection level per 100,000 persons was 997. The following is a breakdown of the numbers according to STI:
- 267 HIV cases per 100,000 residents
- 11,667 chlamydia cases per 100,000 residents
- 5,376 gonorrhea cases per 100,000 residents
- 511 incidences of syphilis for every 100,000 people in the population
To put that number into perspective, the city of Jacksonville has a population of almost one million residents.
Other cities in Florida that appeared on the list were West Palm Beach at number 83, Daytona Beach at number 87, Orlando at number 53, and Tampa at number 59.
According to WSB-TV in Atlanta, which is our sister station, the examination of CDC data focused on the number of HIV infections, chlamydia infections, gonorrhea infections, and syphilis infections that occurred per 100,000 persons.
Despite the fact that the data are from 2021, the CDC researchers found that chlamydia was the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States, with 1.64 million cases.
In 2021, gonorrhea was the second most common sexually transmitted infection (STI), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that the number of infections had increased by 118% from reaching a historic low in 2009. In that year, there were 710,151 cases that were reported.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that even though there were fewer HIV diagnoses recorded in 2020, there were still more than one million Americans over the age of 13 living with the disease in 2020, which is the most recent year for which data is available. During that year, there were around 30,700 cases of illness reported.
According to the CDC, there were 176,713 new cases of syphilis reported in the United States in 2021, including more than 53,000 instances of primary and secondary syphilis, which are considered “the most infectious stages of the disease.” Out of that total, there were 2,855 cases of congenital syphilis, which refers to infections found in infants or stillbirths.
The ranking was compiled by Innerbody, which used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States to determine the number of cases that were present within each set of 100,000 people. This information was then used to rank the locations.
