After confessing that he broke up with his ex-girlfriend and broke into her house, stabbing her 30 times and slicing her neck to “speed up the process,” an Ohio man was given a life sentence.

Chance Donohoe, 27, was found guilty on Thursday of killing Shannon Hiott, 29, and was given a life sentence with the chance of release after 31 years. According to prosecutors’ news release, he entered a guilty plea to charges of aggravated murder and gross mistreatment of a corpse last month.

Jamie Hiott, Hiott’s mother, reportedly yelled at the defendant in court, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

“How scared she must have been. You are a foot taller and 100 pounds heavier,” she stated. “You had all that time to change your mind, but you’re a monster.”

Donohoe’s attorney claimed in a sentencing memo that he was impaired by cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana and had drank a substantial amount of alcohol prior to the crime.

His mother, Ashley Radca, stated in a statement that was included to the sentencing memo that her son has experienced numerous hardships in life, including being raised by a single mother while his real father was away and having intermittent counseling since he was five years old.

“I will never fully understand how my son was capable of doing the horrific things he did the night he ended Shannon’s life,” she stated. “It was so entirely out of character and not like anything he had ever done in the past. What he did was beyond terrible, and he must pay a consequence for his actions.”

On August 29, Hiott passed away. According to the prosecution, Donohoe stabbed the woman after breaking into her home in the 1400 block of Berkeley Road in Columbus.

He ran away from the stabbing, going roughly 20 miles north to his mother’s house in Powell, according to NBC local station WCMH. According to a news release from the authorities, he confessed, contacted 911, and turned himself in.

“I can only imagine what was going through Shannon’s mind as he busts in her door and starts stabbing her,” Assistant Franklin County Prosecutor Dan Lenert stated. “He told the police he slit her throat to speed up the process. This was not drugs, this is not ketamine, this is not methamphetamine, this is not cocaine, this is someone that’s angry. He’s pissed off about posts being made about him on social media. He’s upset about their breakup and he goes to her house that night and sees a vehicle from another man that he knows that he recognizes.”
