When Jordan Chiles placed third in the women’s gymnastics final at the Paris Olympics on Monday, her frustrations gave way to joy.
Chiles received a 13.666 for her routine’s completion, although her score was under investigation. Just as Ana Barbosu of Romania started to rejoice over what she believed to be a bronze medal finish, authorities declared that Chiles’ score had changed.
Chiles’s score of 13.766 propelled her from sixth place to the podium.
As Chiles and Simone Biles hugged, she broke down in tears. Her parents and fellow Olympic athletes were also overcome with emotion as they watched from the stands. Chiles has won her first medal in an individual Olympic competition.
After failing to make it to the podium on the balancing beam, Biles added another silver medal to her total. After competing in the twisties at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, she returned to the international stage and finished her tenure in Paris with four medals, three of which were gold.
