Lancaster County Church Provides Christmas Relief by Paying Off $10M in Medical Debt

WPBN:  A church in Lancaster County, North Carolina, presented families in North and South Carolina who were struggling with medical debt with an early Christmas gift.

The unexpected statement was delivered by Leadership Pastor Derwin Gray of Transformation Church on Sunday, December 23, when the congregation was attending services at the church’s Indian Land site.

Transformation Church, as a result of your generosity, we are going to alleviate, eradicate, and erase ten million dollars’ worth of medical debt for people in the states of North Carolina and South Carolina, Gray explained.

The news comes at a time when the church has been announcing donations to organisations in the community as part of its celebration of the Christmas season.

A gift of $80,000 was given to the Women’s Enrichment Center in Lancaster, and a gift of $50,000 was given to A21 in Charlotte, which is an organization that works to eradicate human trafficking. Both of these donations were announced by the church over the preceding two weeks.

For the purpose of providing assistance with medical debt relief, Transformation Church collaborated with the organization known as “Undue Medical Debt.” It provided fifty thousand dollars to settle the outstanding obligation.

According to Pastor Derwin Gray, the church acknowledges that a significant number of individuals who struggle with medical debt are either underinsured, disabled, or have a poor income. He feels that it is the responsibility of the church to assist them in every manner that they can.

It is unacceptable for anyone to be burdened with medical debt. In addition, Pastor Gray stated during a one-on-one interview that “it is difficult enough to be sick as it is, and so we want to bring some grace during the Christmas season and show them that Christ does indeed love them.”

According to Gray, the church, which has two locations—one in Indian Land and one in Lake Wylie—has paid off more than $25 million in debt since the year 2020.

He expressed his desire to continue collaborating with groups in order to eventually pay off at least one hundred million dollars for families located throughout the Carolinas.

In accordance with the church and Undue Medical Debt, individuals who are eligible for debt relief to be paid off locally are those who have a household income that is four times or lower than the federal poverty line or who have medical debt that is greater than five percent of their annual income.

This declaration was made by the church at the same time as North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper presented a plan a few months ago to minimize the amount of medical debt that North Carolinians have.
