LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Edgar Quinonez, 31, a longtime employee of the Las Vegas Athletic Club, was shot and killed during a shooting at the gym last Friday afternoon. Police confirmed on Monday that Quinonez had no known connection to the suspected shooter, 34-year-old Daniel Ortega, who was also a member of the gym.
What Happened During the Shooting
According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Sheriff Jamie Prosser, Ortega entered the gym carrying a rifle. He initially approached the front desk and exchanged brief words with employees before opening fire.
Ortega shot Quinonez as he fled into the gym. He then continued firing inside the building, reportedly firing 24 rounds in total. Ortega returned to the lobby at one point and fired more shots until his weapon malfunctioned.
Police officers arrived at the scene as Ortega attempted to leave the gym. They engaged and shot him at the entrance door. Ortega later died of his injuries at a nearby hospital.
Other Victims and Investigation
Three other people were injured during the shooting and were transported to local hospitals. One victim remains in critical condition, while the others suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The police have not disclosed their identities or further details on their current condition.
Officials are still investigating the motive behind the attack. So far, no relationship or conflict has been established between Ortega and Quinonez.
