According to court documents, a guy is accused of shooting at two people in a car more than 20 times in retribution for a fight at a Fourth of July celebration. He is now charged with multiple attempted murders.

Officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the vicinity of Rainbow Boulevard and Lone Mountain Road at roughly 12:30 a.m. on July 5.

According to an arrest report, a suspect fired more than 20 shots at a car carrying a woman and her son who were driving close to the scene.

Detectives discovered via their investigation that the night before the shooting, a 24-year-old man by the name of Darius Higuera attended a Fourth of July celebration with his girlfriend. According to investigators, Higuera knew the victims and the shooting was not a random act.

Witnesses claimed that Higuera had “an issue” with family members and that his girlfriend’s mother had asked him to leave the celebration. When Higuera refused to go, a fight broke out between him and another family member.

According to the report, during the altercation, the family member took up a rock and struck Higuera in the head with it. Higuera’s girlfriend persuaded him to go after he showed her the pistol he had in his car.

According to the complaint, Higuera texted his fiancée about the altercation after he had departed, saying, “I should have killed them.” After that, Higuera returned to the residence and, as the brother of his girlfriend noticed, removed the backpack from his car. Higuera can be seen firing twice at a family member who was pursuing him on surveillance footage.

According to the allegation, Higuera exited his car and fired 25 shots at the girlfriend’s brother and mother’s car while they were pursuing him close to Rainbow Boulevard and Lone Mountain Road.

In a phone conversation that Higuera’s girlfriend captured on camera, he claimed to have shot her brother. He reportedly remarked, “I just shot at his dumb [expletive] because he was following me in traffic.”

Higuera added on his girlfriend’s tape that anyone wishing to “call the police, they can, but they won’t find anything because I’m too smart” might do so.

On July 30, Higuera was taken into police custody. Higuera admitted to authorities that he was struck in the head by a rock during a brawl during a Fourth of July celebration, but he would not comment further until he asked for legal representation.

At the Clark County Detention Center, Higuera is being held without the possibility of bond. He is accused of three counts of attempted murder and twenty-seven counts of firing a firearm into or into an occupied building or vehicle.

Monday, August 5 is when he is expected to appear in court again.
