Macy's Store Closure Plan Expands to 65 Locations, but Chiefs Remain Confident in 'Bold New Chapter

WPBN: According to MACY’S executives, 65 outlets will close in the upcoming weeks. The chain’s Bold New Chapter project, which attempts to increase the historic chain’s profitability, includes the impending shutdowns.

By 2026, 150 stores had been scheduled to close. Therefore, it was anticipated that by the end of the year, fifty outlets would close. However, by January 2025, 65 stores would close, according to the company’s CEO, Tony Spring.

“Closures will take place after the holiday, in accordance with our usual cadence,” he said analysts during an earnings call.

According to information released in the spring, there are still 150 anticipated closures. He cautioned, though, that the business will give a report on the numbers the following year.

“The core is to get to a fleet that we think can provide sustainable, profitable growth for the enterprise,” he clarified.

According to Spring, the company’s decision to close further locations demonstrates how it is adjusting to shifting market conditions. He explained, “It’s a reflection of the fact our assets have value and that even in this less stable market, we are transacting.”

The business’s chief financial officer, Adrian Mitchell, disclosed that they are seizing opportunities and that they have made solid agreements.

He clarified that the “economics were not favorable,” which is why the closures were occurring.

“These are places where customers have shifted away from those centers to shop,” he continued. “And these are stores that are just incredibly difficult to run. So I’ll just start with that fundamental premise.”

It has been emphasized by Macy’s executives that stores are opening up despite the fact that they have closed. ‘45,000 store closures’ are on the horizon for the United States.

It is possible that approximately 45,000 traditional stores may close their doors within the next five years, according to experts.

Over the course of the past several years, a number of large retailers have either announced the closing of their stores or completely ceased operations.

Many retail chains, including Foot Locker, Sally Beauty, Tuesday Morning, Shore City, Z Gallerie, and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, have all ceased operations and are no longer in operation.

All of Bed Bath & Beyond’s traditional locations have been shut down, and the company is now only operating as an online retailer. A total of 958 thousand retail stores are expected to be reduced to 913 thousand, according to a prediction made by UBS.

In spite of this, the report suggests that certain stores should achieve success while others should see a decline. According to the report, some of the potential winners include retail establishments like Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, and Target.
