Man Killed in Palm Springs Fertility Clinic Bombing; FBI Calls It Terrorism

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — A 25-year-old man from Twentynine Palms was killed in a bomb explosion Saturday outside the American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic, FBI officials confirmed Sunday.

Authorities identified the deceased as Guy Bartkus, who is believed to be the suspect behind the attack that injured four others. Forensic testing is underway to fully confirm his identity due to the severity of the blast.

Suspect’s Motive and Background

The FBI said Bartkus had “nihilistic ideations” and described the bombing as a targeted attack against the IVF facility. Officials found an “anti pro-life manifesto” believed to be authored by Bartkus, which is under FBI examination.

Authorities also discovered an audio recording online in which a man — thought to be Bartkus — voiced grievances against IVF and expressed disturbing views about the right to die.

The Explosion and Aftermath

The bomb detonated around 11 a.m. outside the clinic in Palm Springs, about 100 miles east of Los Angeles. Video footage shows thick smoke and damage to nearby buildings.

All four injured people have been treated and released from hospitals, according to Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills.

FBI Investigation and Response

The FBI labeled the bombing an intentional act of terrorism, involving their Joint Terrorism Task Force alongside local and federal agencies. Officials executed a search warrant in Twentynine Palms and evacuated neighbors as a precaution.

Several streets remain closed as evidence is collected.

Community Reaction

Palm Springs Police Chief Mills called the incident an isolated tragedy and assured the community is safe.

“Terrorism came knocking on the door of Palm Springs. We survived, and I can tell you … this city will rise,” Mills said.

The fertility clinic confirmed no staff were harmed and their reproductive materials remained intact.

Official Statements

  • U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli confirmed the manifesto and continues to support the investigation.
  • California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed sympathy and said state authorities are closely involved.
  • San Diego Sheriff’s Office announced increased patrols at fertility clinics in the region.
  • Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the violence and reaffirmed the administration’s support for women’s rights.

What Is IVF?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a common fertility treatment where eggs are fertilized in a lab before being implanted in the uterus. Around 2% of U.S. births result from IVF. The procedure remains controversial in some political and religious circles.

Eyewitness Accounts

Witnesses described a loud explosion, debris scattered across the scene, and extensive damage.

“It looked like a movie,” said Nima Tabrizi, who was nearby during the blast. “I can’t imagine if you were within the immediate vicinity of that blast, for you not to get hurt.”
