FRESNO, California — Deputies say that a man with knives was shot and killed Tuesday night in Caruthers. The shooting was done by an officer.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Caruthers Fairgrounds, which is across the street from a school when a man approached children during practice.
The teachers and a parent talked to the unidentified man. The suspect then tried to stab the parent with a knife but missed.
The deputies then followed the suspect to the front of a barbershop near Tahoe and Henderson.
After trying to calm things down for a few minutes outside, cops used bean bag rounds to get the suspect to the ground.
The suspect got up again after this method didn’t work. Officials say that this time, he pulled a bigger knife from his back and ran at the cops who came to help.
The man was shot several times, and even though he was taken to the hospital, he was declared dead at the scene.
A FOX26 viewer sent in a video that shows deputies turning the guy over to help him.
The three involved deputies are now on administrative leave while this probe is going on. The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office has also been asked to help question several witnesses in the area.
Officials say that cars will have to take a different route because that area will be closed all night.
