A family of five was awakened by the sound of popping airbags when an SUV caught fire in their driveway in Maryland.
Vicki and Philip Hill, who have twins who are five years old and a seven-year-old, told FOX 5 that their house may have exploded if their SUV had been parked in their garage and suddenly caught fire because it is located adjacent to a gas line.
The car began to smoke on May 14 before six in the morning, according to footage captured by the house’s doorbell camera, and then it caught fire.
All that was left of the car were its scorched remains and the glass that had been scattered around from the explosion when first responders came and put out the fire.
Vicki Hill told about the explosion, “At first, we thought someone was breaking in, and we were terrified. When my husband told me that the vehicle was on fire and to call 911, my first priority was getting our kids out of the house.”
The Hills believe the explosion may have been caused by the vehicle’s braking system’s ABS actuator pump seal, which they had previously worked on, however the cause of the incident is still being investigated.

Nissan issued a recall for some vehicles’ actuator pump seals between 2015 and 2019 due to the possibility of a leak resulting in electrical issues and, in extreme circumstances, a fire. Whether the 2015 Nissan Murano owned by the Hills was covered by the recall remained unclear.
Nissan allegedly informed the family that a technician wouldn’t be able to visit their home for six to eight weeks.
Nissan stated: “The safety of our customers is extremely important to Nissan. We’ve opened an investigation into this incident. Our team will be reaching back out to Mr. and Mrs. Hill.”
