Miami-Dade Shootout Claims One Life, Lands Three Officers in Hospital After Confrontation with Armed Squatter

Late on Wednesday night, three Miami-Dade police officers were taken to the hospital after a gunfight at a home where a person was believed to be living without permission, according to officials.

The Miami-Dade Police Department informed Fox News Digital that officers from the South District were sent to 22291 SW 162nd Avenue in Miami at around 10:40 p.m. There, they encountered a man with a shotgun at the residence.

When the officers approached the front door, the man, who was suspected of squatting in the house, shot at them. The officers fired back, and the armed man was hit and killed in the exchange.

“He shot at the officers and there was an exchange of gunfire,” Detective Alvaro Zabaleta stated. “One officer, a 35-year-old male, was struck in the upper extremity. The second officer, a 57-year-old male, was struck in the upper extremity and face.”

According to the agency, the two injured policemen were taken to Ryder Trauma Center Jackson South by other officers. A 40-year-old female cop, the third one, was admitted to the hospital for a medical assessment as well.

Stephanie V. Daniels, Miami-Dade Police Director stated that “This type of violence towards my officers will not be tolerated. By the grace of God, they are alive today.”

“I am so thankful that I did not have to go knock on the doors of the officers’ families to tell them that their loved one was not coming home today. I had the opportunity to speak with the officers, and they are in good spirits, and they are in stable condition,” Daniels further added, WBFS-TV reported.
