This weekend, an El Paso resident who is 71 years old will become the oldest competitor in the Miss Texas USA competition.
Marissa Teijo is scheduled to participate in the Houston pageant. The victor will on to compete as Miss USA on behalf of Texas. Miss USA advances to the Miss Universe competition.
This year’s Miss Universe contestants have no age restrictions, as part of the organization’s efforts to be more inclusive. It is now possible for contestants to be married, divorced, or pregnant.
Following the resignations of Miss USA and Miss Teen USA in May, the organization has come under severe scrutiny in recent months. However, Teijo isn’t deterred by that.
She stated in an email that she wished to share the idea that it is never too late to follow your ambitions.
“I feel that all women now have a new stage of opportunity, strength and beauty,” Teijo stated.
