Last week, an automobile accident claimed the lives of an 18-year-old teenager and his mother as they were returning home after their college orientation in New York state, according to police.

According to a news release from New York State Police, on July 19, just before 5 p.m. local time, a 2018 Nissan Maxima was going west on Interstate 86 in New York when it “crossed over the median” and struck an eastbound 2015 Acura RDX.

Colin J. Ferrell, age 18, and Tiffany L. Ferrell, age 44, were both from Endicott, and they were found inside the Acura, according to state police. At the scene, Colin, Tiffany, and Horseheads driver Steven A. Mallory, 36, who was operating the Maxima at the time of the collision, were all declared deceased.

Melinda Spooner set up a GoFundMe page for the Ferrell family after the mother and son’s deaths, saying they were “traveling home from college orientation” at the time of the horrific incident.

According to state police, the crash is still being investigated. In less than 72 hours after it was posted, the fundraiser has raised more than $105,000.

According to a statement from high school principal Steven DiStefano and district superintendent Nicole Wolfe, Colin graduated from Union-Endicott High School in 2024, as reported by the Binghamton Press and Sun Bulletin. Tiffany actively volunteered for the school as well.

“Colin was a kind and compassionate student who loved playing baseball, and Tiffany was a dedicated volunteer for the district, involved in many school and community-related endeavors,” the school officials stated.
