Philadelphia’s Famous Sang Kee Peking Duck House Reopens After Steam Issue Shuts Chinatown Restaurant

WPBN: There was a broken steam pipe that caused municipal inspectors to close down a popular restaurant in Philadelphia’s Chinatown for approximately a week. On Saturday, the eatery reopened its doors after being closed for one week.

On Instagram, Sang Kee Peking Duck House made the announcement that it will be reopening and that it would resume its usual business hours on Saturday.

“Some people say it’s a Christmas miracle,” said Henry Chow, the general manager of the company. “These two weeks are our busiest of the entire year.”

Last week, the Department of Licenses and Inspections ordered the restaurant to close its doors until its electrical and fire panels could be repaired. This was done in order to guarantee the restaurant’s safety.

It was reported by Chow that temporary vents had been built on the sidewalk, and the majority of the steam had been redirected.

“We also had some really great help from PECO, they were able to come in and block some of the steam that was coming in through a conduit,” Chow stated.

The restaurant was established by Chow’s parents in 1980, and to this day, it is considered to be one of the oldest restaurants in Chinatown. According to what he said the previous week, the closure caused the company to lose money on a daily basis.

Long-time clients were relieved to see that the company had resumed operations. According to Chow, the problem with the steam has not been rectified for more than a year and has become more severe recently.

An organization that manages steam pipes in the city stated that the origin of the problem was determined to be a water service line at a nearby business, and that the line was fixed on Friday.

“This whole resolution feels like it’s a big win for the people of Philadelphia, not just us,” Chow stated in an interview.

On her Instagram account, Sang Kee expressed gratitude to a number of local groups and officials, as well as local businesses, for their assistance in reopening their doors.

“During this extraordinarily challenging time, your outpouring of support and offers to assist have meant the world to us. It’s because of your voices and encouragement, combined with the collective efforts of community leaders and city officials, that a temporary solution has been put in place — allowing us to reopen our doors,” according to the post.

Prior to the break of dawn, the restaurant begins its job by roasting hundreds of ducks in the Hong Kong way. They are located near the intersection of 9th and Winter streets.
