Police Officer Fatally Shot in North Carolina Grocery Store Incident Just Before the Christmas

WPBN: An armed man opened fire inside a Food Lion grocery store in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Monday morning, resulting in the death of a police officer from the state of North Carolina.

Officer Michael Horan, 44, of the Greensboro Police Department was the first person to arrive at the store after a 911 call was placed regarding a guy who appeared to be suspicious and was possibly armed. The individual was inside the store.

According to a press statement issued by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), the man pulled out a revolver and shot Horan after getting into a brief scuffle with him. He then drove away from the scene of the crime at approximately eleven in the morning.

The release states that Horan “did not have time to draw or fire his weapon,” which is a negative statement.

After nearly two hours had passed, the authorities reported that the man was discovered behind the wheel in Johnston County. The automobile was pursued by law enforcement officers from the sheriff’s offices in Johnston County and Sampson County as it entered Sutton Town.

As stated in the statement, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol utilized a PIT maneuver in order to bring the vehicle to a stop on Interstate 40 close to the boundary with Duplin County. No incident occurred during the process of taking the individual into custody; nevertheless, he has not yet been identified.

Officials have stated that charges are currently being considered. At the request of the District Attorney for Guilford County, the State Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the investigation.

According to the police department, Horan is a devoted husband and parent who has a “outstanding reputation” both within the department and in the community.

“We ask that you please keep his family, friends and fellow officers in your thoughts and prayers,” a spokesperson stated on Monday/

The statement released by the company read, “Food Lion is deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at our store located at 4709 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro,” and it was included in the company’s official statement. “We express our deepest condolences to the officer’s family and friends.”

The store will continue to be shuttered, according to Food Lion, which stated that it is collaborating with the police.

“We are providing resources to support our associates during this difficult time,” according to the official statement.The Governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, was quoted as saying in a statement that was distributed on social media that he is in communication with both local and state law enforcement on the incident.

“We have sent significant state law enforcement personnel who are helping with the response,” Cooper stated.
