The United States Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides access to a variety of staple foods that millions of Americans would not otherwise be able to buy.
This program is intended to assist low-income families by providing them with an alternate method of buying food at specific retail locations, typically farmers’ markets and grocery shops.
Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, which took the place of paper food stamps starting in 1990, are used to distribute the funds.
The program, which is available to citizens of all 50 states and the District of Columbia, aims to address food insecurity issues that arise from family economic difficulties. In certain states, the program is known by a different name, such as CalFresh in California and SNAP in Idaho.
It is the same with the EBT card, which is known as the ‘Lone Star’ in Texas and the Arizona Quest in Arizona. These cards are used to buy food from a predetermined list and are refilled once a month.
The dates on which these resources are distributed, however, differ by state and other factors like the beneficiary’s name or registration number. A single person’s monthly SNAP benefits might be as low as $292, while a family of eight living in the same home can receive as much as $1,756.
