One person was killed and five more were injured in a shooting that happened Monday night close to an encampment on the outskirts of Minneapolis’ Seward district.

The incident occurred close to 17th and Franklin avenues just before 11:30 p.m., according to the Minneapolis Police Department.

Firefighters and numerous EMTs received assistance at the scene from officers from various departments, including the Minneapolis Park Police, University of Minnesota Police, and Metro Transit Police. In addition, according to police, cops dispersed “an unruly crowd of more than 20 people.”

Six individuals were shot overall, according to the police, and a lady died at Hennepin Healthcare as a result of her wounds. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will reveal her identity later.

According to the police, two males and two women are expected to live, while one man has life-threatening injuries. A man was “arrested for obstruction and unrelated warrants,” according to police, and a gun was found at the scene.

“This just highlights an ongoing problem that we’ve had about homeless encampments,” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated. “I know it’s been incredibly frustrating to a lot of our residents who live close by. Unfortunately, these locations are you know, they’re known for narcotics activity, and they’re just not safe.”

The area’s neighbors express their frustration at the rise in violence and open drug usage.

Robert Lilligren, an employee of the Native American Community Development Institute, stated, “We need help right now. I think the recent shooting is evidence of that. Get resources into our community now. So I’m hoping that the urgency to do that will become a little more elevated and apparent out of the city. We’re facing big challenges.”

Police are asking anyone with information about this shooting to phone 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or send an anonymous online tip to Crime Stoppers.

A man with his legs trapped between a light rail train and the platform was helped by Metro Transit police and Minneapolis firemen in the same spot around thirty minutes prior to the incident. He was admitted to the hospital with minor wounds, but he was later discharged.
