Speeding Drunk Driver Without Headlights Causes Fatal Crash in Chicago, Claims 2 Lives

Two persons who had stopped to change a flat tire were killed when a 21-year-old lady, intoxicated on vodka and traveling at 77 mph without headlights, crashed into their automobile on the Eisenhower Expressway, according to the prosecution.

According to a detention petition, Ashanti Gates, 21, had a blood alcohol content of.186, more than twice the legal limit, shortly after the crash early on Sunday. After dismissing the petition, Judge Mary Marubio freed Gates to stand trial.

Authorities reported that 18-year-olds Erik Cox and Shealyn Sherwood stopped to replace a tire on their way home from the city.

Prosecutors claim that Gates, who had been drinking Tito’s vodka, smashed into their car, which was on the right shoulder, as she raced up the highway in her Hyundai Sonata.

Cox and Sherwood were killed when the stalled automobile struck them as a result of the incident. In their car, a third individual got out alive.

Witnesses recognized Gates as the driver, including adults who were in her vehicle. She acknowledged drinking before driving, according to officials.

She faces misdemeanor accusations of DUI and endangering the welfare of a child, two counts of felony DUI causing a deadly accident, and two counts of reckless homicide.

“An absolutely amazing artist, with one of the most creative, unique, funny, and indescribably spectacular minds,” was how family members described Sherwood. With each step she blessed this world with, she spread nothing but love, laughter, and beauty, having an unfathomably large impact on so many people.

The family added in a GoFundMe campaign, “She made the most of every second she had, and lived more of a fulfilling and fun life than some do in 70 years.”

In a different campaign, friends described Cox as someone who was “full of life and had everything going for him. He had graduated from Rolling Meadows High School 2 weeks ago and was preparing to attend Columbia College in the fall to study graphic design.”
