As consumers who are struggling with inflation look for less expensive groceries, Stop & Shop announced on Friday that it will close seven of its locations in the New York City region and 32 total.

According to industry analysts, as many as 50 of the chain’s “underperforming” locations could close in May. The troubled company is controlled by the Dutch multinational Ahold Delhaize, as reported by The Post.

By November 2, the Quincy, Massachusetts-based business will close four Long Island locations—in Greenvale, Hempstead, East Meadow, and Coram—as well as one in Brooklyn, as well as locations in Westchester and Rockland counties.

Eight percent of the stores will close in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

“[We’re focusing on] delivering lower everyday prices and strong promotions,” the business stated in a statement on Friday.

As previously stated by JJ Fleeman, CEO of USA, “Stop & Shop’s value proposition and pricing are simply not strong enough.”

According to grocery consultant Burt Flickinger of Strategic Resource Group, shoppers pay an additional 12% to 14% at Stop & Shop. However, with inflation skyrocketing during the pandemic, customers lost patience with the chain.

The UFCW represents about 3,800 union members who will be offered jobs at other locations but will be forced to relocate, according to John T. Niccollai, president of local 464A, which is responsible for 12 of the closing stores in New York and New Jersey.

Because of the significant turnover, the company has no plans to fire any employees, Niccollai continued.
