A 4-year-old boy who was injured was still being treated in the hospital as Miami-Dade detectives carried on their hunt for the shooter on Sunday.

The youngster was hit by a stray bullet while in his bedroom on Saturday night in the Tamiami district of Miami-Dade County, according to police, following a fight that turned into gunfire outside the boy’s mobile home. A shattered window and bullet halls on one of the outer walls.

At around nine o’clock at night, in the University Lakes mobile home community, close to Southwest 127 Court and 12 Street, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel discovered the youngster in “critical but stable” condition.

The youngster was transported to the HCA Florida Kendall Hospital by fire rescue personnel in an ambulance. Hassell Oprota, the boy’s mother, acknowledged that they were fortunate this time around but expressed concern that “maybe next time” they won’t be.

Detective Luis Sierra, a Miami-Dade Police Department spokesperson, stated, “Thankfully, the child is going to be OK.”

According to witnesses, the boy’s parents were at home with him and had nothing to do with the argument. The two culprits, according to the neighbors, fled, but this wasn’t the first time police had been called in due to fighting in the neighborhood.

Detectives urged anyone with knowledge regarding this or any other crime to contact Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
