Tennessee Man Sentenced to 261 Years for Five Murders, Calls Himself a 'Serial Killer'

After entering a guilty plea on Valentine’s Day to three counts of first-degree murder, a man from Memphis, who referred to himself as a “serial killer” during his trial, was given an additional 159 years in prison. He was sentenced to this additional sentence.

As a result of his previous conviction for two charges of first-degree murder, which resulted in life sentences totaling 102 years, his sentence is to be served concurrently to his previous conviction. He is facing a total of 261 years in jail for the five murders that he committed.

The self-proclaimed murderer, Joshua Dotson, was found guilty in the year 2020 of assaulting and killing his ex-girlfriend, Jamesha Covson, as well as their unborn child in the month of August 2024.

Although he called her a “sex worker” in court and claimed that she was aware of his past murders, which he stated was his motivation for killing her, Dotson wrote “fly high.” on social media in remembrance of Covson after her death. He also claimed that she was aware of his other murders.

After the initial sentencing, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office issued a statement in which they expressed their hope that the punishment will bring some kind of justice to the mother and child.

“Todayā€™s sentencing brings a measure of justice for Jamesha Covson and her unborn child,” a spokesperson for the Shelby County District Attorneyā€™s Office stated. “The courtā€™s decision affirms that those who commit acts of violence with such disregard for human life will be held accountable. Our hearts are with the family and friends of Jamesha Covson, and we hope this sentence brings them some peace as they continue to grieve this profound loss.”

During the course of the trial, Dotson adopted an unconventional strategy by frequently testifying in his own defense and referring to himself as a “serial killer.” “Michael Myers,” a fictitious killer, was another character who he compared himself to.

In the end, Dotson went on to assert that he was responsible for three other homicides that occurred between the years 2019 and 2020.

Dotson entered a guilty plea to three charges of reckless endangerment with a dangerous weapon, which included three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Divieon Parker, two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Renita Bennett and Reginald Anderson, and three deaths.

“After five years, we are pleased to finally have justice for Dotsonā€™s multiple victims. His sentences, both from the guilty verdict after a trial and these two pleas today, amount to 261 years in prison. While no amount of time in prison will bring the victims back to their loved ones, we are content that he will never be a threat to our community again,” Prosecutor Regina Lucreziano stated.
