Residents of South Carolina may be eligible to receive a portion of the $1.8 billion mystery money discovered in the state’s bank account.
A House plan, according to WCIV, would provide taxpayers who filed a return in 2023 with a one-time refund. It would vary based on each person’s unique tax liability, from a few hundred to about $1,200.
However, it would only occur if the inquiry establishes that the funds are public funds. If it turns out to be government money, the plan would be altered.
Over the course of the previous ten years, money passed through a bank account in South Carolina without anyone being aware of its origin or intended destination. Both the top banker and accountant in the state agree that it was their duty.
Legislators are still investigating the source of the funds, what should be done with them, and whether any laws were committed.
