A smash-and-grab robbery at Greenwood Trading Post about three in the morning on Monday resulted in the theft of over a dozen weapons.
According to the police, the robbers crashed the front glass door into a brick column by using a stolen car. Next, they smashed into the display case and took roughly twenty handguns.
Fairview Place and State Road 135 are the locations of the firearms store.
Gun stores in the Johnson County city are frequently targeted, according to Greenwood Police Department Assistant Police Chief Matthew Fillenwarth. Due to the ease with which weapons can be trafficked on the underground market, I am unaware of any that have not been the target of burglary suspects.
Later on Monday, the bricks and shattered glass outside the store were cleared away. It was boarded up, the glass door. Although the gun store employees declined to be interviewed for camera, Greenwood police said that the car is visible in CCTV footage.
According to Fillenwarth, gun identifiers such as serial numbers will be added to a national database, which will notify law enforcement if any firearms are discovered across the nation. But perhaps it’s too late, he adds.
“It’s fairly safe to assume those guns are already in criminals’ hands and will probably be making their way on the streets fairly quickly.”
He continued that, “Best case for us, we are able to quickly identify suspects and get those guns before they make it on the streets and are used in crimes.”
