A two-year-old child who accidently shot himself in a Walmart parking lot has left his family inconsolable.

In a GoFundMe page created for the family, Nakyzi Odums’ grandmother spoke of him as a little child who “laughed wholeheartedly, smiled brightly, and loved unconditionally.”

According to WALB, the child accidently shot himself on Wednesday outside of a Walmart in Douglas, Georgia, and died as a result. According to witnesses, his parents were only a few feet away from a fireworks stand when they heard a pop.

The shocked parents realized their kid had shot himself in the chest as they hurried back to their car. After being taken to the hospital immediately, the boy tragically died in a Jacksonville, Florida trauma facility.

“The Douglas Police Department regrets to inform the community that the young child who suffered an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound on July 3, 2024, has sadly passed away this afternoon, July 6th, 2024, at a trauma center in Jacksonville, Florida,” the police update said at the time of the death.

“Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the loss of our beautiful Nakyzi Odums,” the boy’s grandmother wrote on the fundraiser. For his parents, Sam Odums and Laileighauna Parks, he was unquestionably the source of light and love. He laughed heartily, smiled brightly, and loved without conditions.

Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette stated: “You’re allowed to have a gun in the car, but when there’s a child involved, you need to make sure that the gun is secure so that the child doesn’t have access to it.”

The question for investigators is how the youngster came into possession of the gun. According to witnesses, he had the gun in the side of the car door and was seated in the front seat.

It’s unclear right now if the boy’s parents will be prosecuted for his death.
