During a traffic stop, the man who shot and murdered 29-year-old Chicago Police Officer Ella French was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release on Wednesday.

According to a local news outlet, the defendant, Emonte Morgan, 24, was also sentenced to seven years for unlawful use of a firearm and fifty years for irreparably injuring French’s companion, Carlos Yañez.

Yañez’s career was ruined by the attack: although he could again walk alone after being first paralyzed, the bullet pieces in his neck and shoulder were too dangerous to remove. He reportedly testified during the trial that he had lost his right eye.

“I don’t think it’s justice,” he stated on Wednesday. “I’m not going to get closure. I’m affected for the rest of my life.”

According to the prosecution, on August 7, 2021, the cops stopped Morgan and his brother Eric Morgan during a traffic stop. Morgan did not plan to shoot, according to the defense, and the gun exploded when he attempted to put it down.

Prosecutors, however, claimed that he fired several times and that neither officer produced a weapon. Joshua Blas, the detective, also made it through the ordeal.

“Today, justice was served as the court sentenced Emonte Morgan to life in prison for the brutal killing of Chicago Police Officer Ella French and the grievous injury of her partner, Officer Carlos Yanez, Jr., in 2021,” Cook County prosecutors stated. “Officer French’s commitment to serving our city with integrity and honor will never be forgotten, and we stand with her family, friends, and the entire Chicago Police Department as they continue to mourn her loss. We would be remiss not to laud Officer Yanez for his courage and resilience throughout this ordeal which has been nothing short of inspiring. Today’s sentencing reinforces our unwavering dedication to seeking justice for all victims of violence and ensuring that those who commit such heinous crimes are held accountable.”

After entering a guilty plea to charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, violence, and obstruction of justice in relation to French’s death, Eric Morgan, the brother of Morgan, was given a seven-year jail sentence last year.

Jamel Danz, an Indiana citizen, was the third guy to be sentenced to two and a half years in jail for obtaining the gun used in French’s murder unlawfully.
