A man in his 20s lost his life this afternoon when a dirt bike, traveling at approximately 60 miles per hour on Capper Road in a 40-mile-per-hour zone, collided with a sports utility vehicle.
The incident occurred as the small SUV was making a left-hand turn onto Bessent Road, resulting in a collision with the dirt bike. Following the impact, the motorcycle slid into the westbound lane and was subsequently struck by another vehicle.
Emergency services transported the rider to a local hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) reported that this marks the 164th traffic fatality in the county, with the 31st death involving a motorcyclist.
Witnesses and the SUV driver are reportedly cooperating with the police investigation.
Notably, the dirt bike involved was declared not street-legal. Additionally, a toxicology report on the bike rider is pending, and results are expected after some time.
“In this case the motorcycle was an off-highway two wheel dirtbike that was not equipped nor registered for roadway use and it does not appear that the rider was wearing a helmet,” police said. “There were no signs of impairment on either of the other two vehicle operators who remained at the scene and are cooperating with detectives.”
