Newly released body camera footage depicts the events leading up to a tragic deputy-involved shooting last month inside a 7-Eleven on West Oak Ridge Road.
The footage shows an Orange County sheriff’s deputy killing a man named Tristan Mayberry, 19, in the convenience store’s candy aisle. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were conducting surveillance at a nearby home when they noticed Mayberry, a suspected gang member, leave.
Deputies pursued Mayberry to the 7-Eleven, where an attempt to confront him swiftly turned into mayhem. In the footage, a deputy enters the business and approaches Mayberry and a companion, who is facing away from him.
“Boss, man!” “You know, only one of you can be riding on a scooter, right?” the deputy inquires.
Mayberry, seen with a phone in his right hand and a bottled beverage in his left, turns around and says, “No, sir. “I didn’t realize that.”
“Come here, man!” “Come here, dude,” the deputy replies, requesting Mayberry to show some identification.
As the deputy follows Mayberry down the aisle and around a corner to the left, he points his firearm at the adolescent and tells him to halt.
“Hey! Stop! Stop!” the policeman orders, but Mayberry continues and is approached by a second deputy in the opposite aisle. The second deputy, with his gun drawn, instructs Mayberry to raise his hands as the adolescent turns around and walks toward the first deputy, who shoots two shots at him.
Mayberry is heard screaming and collapsing on the floor.
The second deputy holsters his rifle and kneels over Mayberry, but a struggle breaks out. The second deputy can be heard yelling at Mayberry, “Don’t grab!”
According to cops, Mayberry defied their orders and attempted to grab a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine in his waistband. According to the sheriff’s office, the second deputy attempted to secure the revolver during the fight. That’s when the first deputy shot six more shots at Mayberry.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the event.
