WPBN: Storm debris has been strewn across barrier island streets for months.
For many, the rubbish heaps served as a reminder of what had been lost. Why, therefore, is one man returning there with that removed debris? The response is straightforward: He is creating a tree out of trash.
One may characterize Gary Ludwig’s design space in a variety of ways. Just remember to include the phrase “character.” He’s working on one of his most intriguing compositions to date this week.
“Well they wanted to have a trashy Christmas tree. So, I’m using all of the trash. Including all of the nails that we have,” Ludwig stated.
Every piece of board, nail, and hinge has a unique story to tell. It’s an improbable tale for this project. It’s a Christmas tale about a hurricane.
“It was a combination of museum requests and they wanted to use the trashed up materials caused by Helene and Milton. And rather than throwing them in the debris pile, let’s make some use out of them — recycle them,” he stated. “We’re looking at how you display the trash and that’s what happens during a hurricane. Things get all broken up. So, we don’t really want it to be squared off.”
The three Christmas trash trees came together over the course of two days. The Gulf Beaches Historical Museum commissioned the piece.
Furthermore, Ludwig wants these trees to convey a certain message, even though art is subjective.
“I want them to see destruction. I want them to be reminded that even though a lot of people lost everything, a lot of people were very lucky and were able to appreciate what was left and do something creative with it,” he stated.
Therefore, there is some good news if you’re concerned about being on the bad list. There won’t be any coal beneath the trees because they will be erected at the museum across from the shore.
This Sunday on Pass-a-Grille Beach, the trees will be on display at the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum. A Christmas decoration event called Light Up the Museum is being held at the museum. While they work to rebuild inside, everyone is welcome to rejoice outside.
