A federal scholarship designed to increase enrollment in historically Black colleges and universities for students from underserved and rural communities has been suspended.
The 1890 Scholars Program, which offered recipients complete tuition and fees for students pursuing studies in agricultural, food, or natural resource sciences at one of 19 universities—known as the 1890 land grant institutions—was stopped by the U.S. Department of agricultural.
Although the precise date of the program’s suspension is unknown, some Congressmen initially voiced their disapproval of the move on Thursday. The Department of Agriculture received a message on Saturday asking for more information.
According to a statement that was published on the website of the 1890 Scholars Program, the government announced that the program had been discontinued pending further evaluation.
At the same time as the suspension is being implemented, the administration of President Donald Trump has also implemented a financial freeze.
The authorities of the administration had stated that the delay was essential in order to examine whether or not the spending was in accordance with the executive orders issued by Trump over problems such as diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and climate change.
The freeze has been challenged in court, and a temporary stop has already been placed on the action taken by the executive branch.
Alabama A&M University, Florida A&M University, North Carolina A&T University, and Tuskegee University in Alabama are among the universities that have been impacted by this situation.

In spite of the fact that the scholarship program was founded in 1992, the year 1890 is mentioned in the title. This is because the passage of the Second Morrill Act in 1890 established historically black institutions and universities.
The eligibility requirements include being a citizen of the United States with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and being accepted to one of the 19 land grant universities that were established in 1890.

According to the website of the department, students who are eligible must show that they “demonstrate leadership and community service” in addition to studying agriculture or disciplines related to it.
A statement was made by the department in October stating that it had reserved $19.2 million for the program. The department said that 94 students were fortunate enough to get scholarships during the fiscal year 2024.
