The dessert table is now the scene of the culture wars. After Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of “The View,” hinted that a New York bakery rejected her order due to her liberal political views, what was meant to be a straightforward birthday gift turned into the newest flashpoint.
The bakery has refuted the accusation. As locals demonstrate their support for the little business, the store now claims that its phone lines are overflowing with orders.
The uproar began when Goldberg said on Wednesday’s episode of “The View” that she had attempted to order a batch of charlotte russe from a family-run bakery in New York City, displaying plates of sponge cakes topped with whipped cream and a cherry.
The audience gasped when she said, “Now, I should tell you, Charlotte russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me.” She continued by speculating that “perhaps they did not like my politics.”
When Goldberg was invited to appear on “The View” last month, she was candid about her support for Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate at the time.
“I’m not telling you who made them because people went and got them despite their claims that their ovens had broken and other things,” Goldberg added. However, the cakes’ unique polka-dotted packaging made it clear to local viewers that she was referring to Holtermann’s Bakery in Staten Island.
Jill Holtermann, the proprietor of the bakery, swiftly refuted claims that she rejected Goldberg for political motives, stating that she was unable to fulfill the actor’s first requests for the cakes due to boiler problems.
In an Instagram video posted on Thursday, however, Goldberg reaffirmed her claim, stating that although it still seemed “a little odd” that the bakery was unable to fulfill her birthday order, “somehow, they were able to accept an order of a different 48 of the same dessert when somebody else called without using my name.”
During a press conference on Friday, Republican Vito Fossella, the borough president of Staten Island, stood with other local officials in front of Holtermann’s Bakery and declared, “We’re here today to support them, to say that Staten Island stands with them, and I venture to guess that people across this country knew what the Holtermann family was all about.”
Another instance in recent weeks that highlights how culture and politics have grown more explosive was when actress Rachel Zegler was criticized for her divisive anti-Donald Trump remarks on the internet.

In her Instagram story, Zegler, who plays Snow White in Disney’s upcoming live adaptation of the classic movie, expressed her hope that “Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself may never know peace.” According to conservative media personality Megyn Kelly, Zegler should be fired by Disney “because this woman is a pig.”
In an updated Instagram story on Thursday, Zegler expressed regret for her remarks, saying, “I let my emotions get the best of me.”
‘Hatred and anger have caused us to move further and further away from peace and understanding, and I am sorry I contributed to the negative discourse,” Zegler stated. “I firmly believe that everyone has the right to their own opinion, even when it differs from my own.”
