13-Year-Old Swimmer Breaks Decades-Old Record Set by Olympian

Although records are meant to be broken, some are more difficult to break than others.

In the 50-meter freestyle on Friday, 13-year-old swimmer Gabi Brito shattered two age-specific records, one of which was held by a 12-time Olympic medallist.

Brito broke the 26-second mark in the prelims, making history as the first swimmer in Southern California Swimming LSC at her age to do so.

Dara Torres set the record for the fastest swim in the 50-meter freestyle in 1982, and it had stood for more than 40 years. Brito beat the legend by.07 seconds with a time of 25.97.

When Brito finished third in the Speedo Grand Challenge later that day, she became the fastest 13-year-old on record. According to SwimSwam, she broke the 13U record with a time of 25.71 seconds, finishing third behind only USC alum Caroline Famous (25.58) and seven-time Olympic medallist Simone Manuel (24.69).

Kate Douglass set the record for 13-year-olds in 2015 with a time of 25.80, but her time beats her record. The site claims that Brito’s timing is just.02 seconds short of the qualifying mark for the US Olympic Trials.

According to SwimSwam, Brito competed in the 100 fly, 200 back, and 100 freestyle events over the weekend. Bella Brito, her elder sister, has committed to USC as a member of the 2025 high school class.

Gabi Brito still has time to choose a college; let her graduate from high school first! Nevertheless, she has already made history with her incredible race.
