Washington, District of Columbia will be the location where six educators from the state of Colorado will be honored for their accomplishments. These educators have been chosen to receive the nation’s highest accolade for K-12 STEM teachers.
The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching was presented to 336 recipients this week, including winners from the 2021, 2022, and 2023 application cycles.
The announcement was made by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy which is responsible for science and technology policy.
In order to be considered for this award, teachers must go through a “rigorous application process,” as stated in a press release issued by the Colorado Department of Education.
The winners are selected on the basis of “their distinction in the classroom and dedication to contributing to the improvement of STEM education.”

“These awards honor the vital role that America’s teachers and mentors play in shaping the next generation of technical leaders, including scientists, engineers, explorers, and innovators,” according to the White House statement‘s in a press release .
A total of six educators from the state of Colorado were honored with this award.
Science winners of the PAEMST
- The winner for the year 2021 is Linda Flohr, who can be found at West Middle School in Mesa County Valley School District 51.
- Roaring Fork Schools’ Autumn Rivera, who attends Glenwood Springs Middle School, was the winner of the 2022 competition.
- The winner for the year 2023 is Dr. Yajaira Fuentes-Tauber, who attends Rocky Mountain High School in the Poudre School District.
Mathematical winners of the PAEMST
- The winner for the year 2021 is Jacob Thompson, who works in the STEM Lab at Adams 12 Five Star Schools.
- One of the winners for the year 2022 is Amanda Jaquette, who attends Brown International Academy in Denver Public Schools.
- One of the winners for the year 2023 is Sydney Cerise, who attends Early College Academy in Greeley School District 6.
“These award-winning educators reflect our state’s commitment to advancing STEM education, and each of them is helping to prepare and inspire Colorado’s generation of scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and innovators,” CDE Commissioner Susana Córdova stated.

Recipients of the National Science Foundation reward are presented with a ten thousand dollar reward, a certificate that has been signed by the President of the United States, and a trip to Washington, District of Columbia, where they will participate in recognition activities and chances for professional growth.
