A 7-year-old girl was still critically injured on Tuesday after she and her mother were struck by an SUV driven by a senior citizen the day before outside a pharmacy on Coral Way.

Just before 4 p.m. on Monday, according to Miami police, the 92-year-old driver struck the two outside of Navarro Discount Pharmacy, located at 2120 SW 32nd Ave., after mistaking her Nissan Rogue’s gas pedal for the brake pedal.

According to Miami police and fire spokespeople, the girl was rendered unconscious and taken in serious condition to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Soon after the accident, kind people came to her aid.

Her mom suffered injuries as well. Although her survival is anticipated, authorities warned that the small girl could die as a result of the nonagenarian’s error.

“Unfortunately, she suffered major head injuries and some hip injuries. Now she’s doing very critical,” Officer Michael Vega, a Miami Police Department spokesperson stated. “We’re hoping that she recovers, but it’s still looking like she’s not doing very well.”

Elderly citizens are now being forcefully advised by the police to reassess their driving abilities as they become older.

“Talk to them and try to encourage that if they are in conditions where they are not driving well, tell them, ‘You might want to consider using an alternate (form of) transportation,'” Vega stated.

The unidentified driver received a citation for reckless driving. The police don’t anticipate bringing any criminal cases.
