An Amazon delivery driver is accused of killing a septuagenarian Georgia woman as she crossed the street after visiting a cemetery to pay homage to her departed family members. The driver allegedly continued on his route after the deadly collision.

According to Peach State police, Sandra Fitts, 79, passed away after being hit at an intersection close to her old residence. According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, London Rozier Best, 25, is currently charged with one count each of hit-and-run resulting in death and vehicular murder in the first degree.

The incident happened just outside of Canton, a tiny city located about 41 miles to the north-northwest of Atlanta, on November 12 at roughly 6:30 p.m.

A hit-and-run along Cumming Highway close to the intersection of Jordan Lane prompted a call to law enforcement. Fitts passed away at the crime site. According to authorities, she most likely passed away instantly when the Rivian Delivery car struck her.

In a news release released by Atlanta-based radio station WSB, the sheriff’s office stated that “a deputy had spotted an Amazon truck turn down Bishop Drive while responding to the accident and called for assistance to the area to search for the vehicle.”

An Amazon delivery truck was discovered by a member of the local police department on the same street in the town, displaying damage allegedly consistent with the hit-and-run that claimed the woman’s life.

According to a local news station, Capt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office stated that although the woman and her husband had recently sold their house, they still visited the area because Fitts would visit with the memories of her departed family members and feed wild cats at the nearby cemetery’s family plot.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation,” Baker stated. “It appears that he knows what happened and he actually continued to deliver packages in the area.”

Family members who are still alive describe the loss as a sorrow that reverberates. The victim is recalled with fondness in her obituary.

“Had he not left the scene it’s very likely that he wouldn’t been charged, certainly not with these felonies,” Baker stated. “Because, I mean, it was dark and she was crossing the highway. So, if you’re ever in an accident, stop.”

According to a sheriff’s office statement quoted by People magazine, Best also faces a number of relatively minor marijuana-related charges after a check of the Amazon delivery truck allegedly turned up drugs and drug paraphernalia.

According to a statement received by Atlanta-based Fox affiliate WAGA, Amazon stated the defendant will not be allowed to drive for the company until the criminal investigation is over.

At the moment, Best is being held without bond.
