The Department of Veterans Affairs has recently announced its plan to allocate $806.4 million in two grants aimed at addressing the issue of homelessness among U.S. veterans.

A program has been allocated $797.5 million by the VA to assist veterans in finding and maintaining housing. The program is called Supportive Services for Veteran Families.

Additional funding of $8.9 million has been allocated to the Grant and Per Diem Program, which aims to support veterans by providing transitional housing and case management services.

“We’re making real progress in reducing Veteran homelessness, but there is much more work to do,” said VA Secretary Denis McDonough in a statement.

In the latest report on homelessness, it was revealed that there are currently 35,574 veterans without a home. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there has been a 53% decline since 2010. In 2010, the number of homeless veterans was 76,329.

The VA has set a target to provide permanent housing for 46,500 homeless veterans by fiscal year 2024.
