Prosecutors claim that an 83-year-old man was found guilty by a Colorado jury on Friday of killing and dismembering his wife and crippled daughter.

Reginald MacLaren was found guilty on two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of tampering with a deceased corpse, and two counts of false reporting, according to a news release from the office of the 18th Judicial District Attorney.

After using an ax to murder his wife Bethany MacLaren, 70, and daughter Ruth Jennifer MacLaren, 35, MacLaren sliced them up with a saw and placed their remains in trash cans he had purchased from Home Depot more than a week prior.

On March 25, 2023, at around six o’clock in the evening, Reginald MacLaren allegedly called the Englewood Police Department to report that he thought his wife and daughter had been murdered.

Two sizable garbage cans were in the living room when the police arrived. Prosecutors said that his daughter was in one bin and his wife’s severed body was in the other. Then, officers discovered the saw near to the garbage cans and a big ax inside a cupboard.

“Mr. Maclaren betrayed his family in a gruesome and senseless ambush that he planned for weeks,” Chief Deputy DA Jake Adkins stated. “He violently murdered his wife and daughter and planned to dispose of their bodies like trash.”

On July 11, a judge will sentence him. A mandatory life sentence awaits him.

“It is difficult to imagine the fear and confusion that these two women endured in their final moments.” Senior Deputy DA Corrie Caler stated. “Ruth and Bethany Maclaren lives’ were needlessly cut short, and we are thankful for the jury in returning a just verdict.”

Both victims looked to have suffered “substantial injuries,” according to a news statement from Englewood police, and they displayed “no signs of life.” At the scene, they were declared deceased.

The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit, and Englewood Homicide Detectives all arrived at the crime scene to collaborate on the investigation.

A written document from the detectives claims that they “observed large amounts of blood throughout the apartment” and that they discovered a Stanley brand hand saw close to the trash cans.

Detectives said that MacLaren confessed to the killings almost three hours after the 911 call. He claimed that he had killed his family to keep them from becoming homeless after losing his job.

“Approximately 10 days ago, [MacLaren] began planning to kill his family so they would not be homeless,” as per the affidavit. “He bought an ax, two ‘Totter’ style trash cans and a hand saw from Home Depot. He fully intended to use these items in the commission of the murders.”

“This morning (3/25/23) at approximately 11 a.m., his wife and daughter were sitting on the couch. He struck his wife in the head with the ax, immediately knocking her unconscious,” according to the affidavit. “He then struck his daughter in the head with the ax, knocking her unconscious. He struck each victim in the head with the ax two more times. He knew he had killed them.”

In addition, MacLaren said detectives that he “used the saw had purchased to saw the victims’ arms and legs off” before placing his wife and daughter’s remains in the cans since he knew their bodies would not fit in the recently acquired trash cans.

He said to the police that he was unable to move the dead because he lacked the strength to lift the cans.

Some of the detectives who had worked for more than 20 years, according to Englewood Police Division Chief Tracy Jones, described the interior of MacLaren’s home as “one of the most gruesome crime scenes that they’d ever been a part of.”
