The New York City police reported the apprehension of an unidentified 44-year-old man who raced through midtown Manhattan, striking nine people, including a police officer, just blocks away from the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
Law enforcement officials stated that the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Monday at the intersection of West 34th Street and Ninth Avenue. The suspect drove his black SUV onto the sidewalk, running over six pedestrians and a police officer.
The driver collided with multiple marked police cars and a food truck, causing it to tip over and trap a 39-year-old woman beneath it. Emergency services transported the woman to a nearby hospital, where she is reported to be in stable condition.
Both the police officer and the other pedestrians struck by the vehicle were taken to the hospital in stable condition. The suspect, however, was transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition.
According to police reports, authorities observed the suspect involved in a dispute with another individual at the corner of Seventh Avenue and West 34th Street. When officers attempted to intervene, the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle.
Charges against the suspect are currently pending.
