Janitorial Company’s Tough Decision: 438 Layoffs in Florida

Janitorial Company's Tough Decision 438 Layoffs in Florida

Montreal-based company GDI Integrated Facilities Services is letting go of 1,867 employees in the United States, including 438 in Florida. This decision follows the cancellation of their contract to provide janitorial services at some Amazon warehouses.

The company, in a letter to meet federal notice requirements, stated that all employees working at 27 Amazon warehouses across 10 states would be affected. Although the letter didn’t explain the contract loss, it mentioned it only impacted “certain Amazon locations.”

GDI did not disclose how many Amazon warehouses it will continue to work in or the financial impact of losing the contract. In Florida, job losses include 101 in Ruskin, 49 in Lakeland, 38 in Auburndale, 106 in Orlando, 99 in Opa-locka, and 45 in Deltona.

While the letter didn’t specify the job end dates, Florida’s WARN database indicates a layoff date of March 5 for the affected employees in the state.

Beyond Florida, GDI also cut jobs at Amazon warehouses in South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana, and Kentucky. GDI, servicing 1 billion square feet and with 30,000 employees in the U.S. and Canada, reported a 9% increase in third-quarter revenue to $615 million in its most recent earnings report.
