Florida is famous for its sunny beaches, theme parks, and citrus fruits. However, there’s a hidden problem in the state: human trafficking. This is a modern form of slavery where people are forced or tricked into working or engaging in sex.
In 2020, Florida ranked third in the U.S. for reported cases of human trafficking, with 738 cases, as per the National Human Trafficking Hotline.
A detailed study by InsiderMonkey, using data from the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the National Human Trafficking Hotline, reveals that Tampa has the highest rate of human trafficking in Florida.
Tampa: The City With the Highest Human Trafficking Rate
Tampa is a big city on the west side of Florida, home to about 400,000 people. It’s a popular place for tourists, known for attractions like Busch Gardens, the Florida Aquarium, and the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team.
Tampa is also important for trade, with the Port of Tampa being the biggest in Florida and the seventh-largest in the country.
However, these good things also bring a bad side. Tampa has a significant problem with human trafficking. It’s a major center for illegal human labor trade in Florida. One reason is that Tampa has easy access to the world through its airports and seaports.
Traffickers take advantage of these transportation connections to bring victims in and out of the country or move them within the state. Many of the victims, often women and children, are tricked with false promises of jobs, education, or love. Then, they’re forced into things like prostitution, domestic servitude, or other types of exploitation.
The issue of human trafficking in Tampa is not new. In 2006, the FBI said Tampa was one of 13 cities in the U.S. with a high number of child prostitution cases.
In 2012, Tampa hosted the Republican National Convention, which led to more people visiting and an increased demand for sex workers. In 2019, Tampa hosted the Super Bowl, known as one of the biggest events for human trafficking in the country.
