The Valentine’s Day fundraiser for an animal shelter in New Jersey is getting a lot of attention because the organization is promising to “neuter your ex.”
On social media, the Blackwood, Pennsylvania-based Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center stated that anyone wishing to donate $50 would earn the naming rights to a feral cat that the shelter will spay or neuter.

One promotion that the shelter launched was called “neuter your ex for Valentine’s Day.”
Eric Schwartz, director of development at Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center, told CBS Philadelphia that “a board member mentioned that an idea had come through a volunteer about ‘neuter your ex.'”
“As we start talking about a tagline, ‘Some things shouldn’t breed,’ I think it becomes so relatable to people,” Schwartz stated. “Because whether they want to talk about it openly or not, I think an image or a name comes into their mind. So it’s just kind of taken off and we’re certainly appreciative of the attention that it can bring to these animals.”
According to Schwartz, 40 to 50 people have already donated to name feral kittens after their ex-partners, demonstrating the success of the fundraiser.
According to him, the program’s proceeds will enable the shelter to keep spaying and neutering stray cats.
“Our spay and neuter and release program allows us to get some of these stray cats off the streets,” Schwartz stated. “Obviously, it’s a cycle that needs to be broken or at least limited. And to keep these strays off the street is a big help.”
