Mother's Carelessness Leads to Tragic Death of Toddler in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —
In connection with the choking death of her two-year-old son, a local lady has been charged with manslaughter.

Appalonia Lampkin, who is 32 years old, is currently being held in jail on a number of serious allegations, including aggravated manslaughter of a child and six counts of neglect of a child.

According to the investigators, she was fully aware of the medical problem that her toddler son had, which made it difficult for him to breathe.

According to the report, the victim’s mother was “warned against allowing (the victim) to sleep while sitting up” and that the “dangers of being left unattended could potentially be fatal.”

According to the investigators, she put her son, who was two years old, and her daughter, who was one year old in danger many times on that day while they were staying in the hotel room that had been prepared by FEMA.

According to the investigation, there was a moment when the woman “left her children in her running motor vehicle, unattended for over 40 minutes.”

The judge decided that the amount of her bond for count No. 1 would be $100,000.

But the event escalated to manslaughter when detectives claim she left her baby in a car seat in the hotel room for forty minutes as she met with FEMA down the hall, which they believe is a violation of the hotel’s policy. After the meeting, the report states that Lampkin let out a “scream and wail as she has discovered (the victim) unresponsive in his car seat in the hotel room.”

The toddler was discovered “slumped down in his seat with his legs hanging out as if he were trying to get out or fell asleep.”

Accidental choking was ruled to be the cause of death by the medical examiner, who acknowledged that the car seat belt may have been a contributing factor.

It is stated in the report that the “chest buckle pressed up against his neck potentially obstructing his airway.”

According to the investigation, Lampkin said that her “artificial nails are too long for her to properly manipulate the harness functions.” Additionally, the report states that Lampkin admitted that she does not know how to properly use a car seat.
