At Norfolk International Airport on Friday, a Florida man tried to board an aircraft but was stopped by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents.
The x-ray unit notified him about his carry-on bag as soon as he passed through the security check. When TSA agents opened the bag, they discovered a pistol with 13 rounds in it, one of which was in the chamber.
Due to his carrying a gun through a TSA security checkpoint, the individual now risks a severe financial civil penalty. These fines may increase to $15,000 based on the specific situation.
The Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney will also be notified about the matter in order to pursue potential criminal charges.

“It appears that this traveler had packed his firearm in a gun case, however, he needed just a few more important steps before he could travel with it,” according to Robin “Chuck” Burke, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport. “He needed to ensure the firearm was unloaded, then taken the locked gun case to his airline to declare he wanted to fly with it. At that point, the airline representative would ensure that the firearm could be transported as checked baggage Our TSA officers remain vigilant during this busy spring break travel season to help ensure everyone can travel safely.”
If a passenger wants to bring a gun on a flight, they must unload it, pack it in a secured, hard-sided case, and bring it to the airline check-in desk to be disclosed. You may get more details about how to transport a firearm safely here.
