Challenging the Verdict: Appeal Sought in 1991 Ohio's 10-year-old Child Stabbing

Amber Garrett’s daughter was killed in 1991. She was found dumped by the side of the road in a forested location near West Harrison, Indiana, after suffering seven stab wounds.

“She had so much going for her. She went to church all the time. She helped people when she could. She used to go to the police station and hang out with them. She wanted to be a police officer,” Garrett stated.

In 1991, Amber, Garrett’s daughter, was killed. After receiving seven stab wounds, she was abandoned by the side of the road in a forested location in West Harrison, Indiana.

“Why,” Garrett stated. “What did she do? She was 10 years old.”

“It tears me up,” Carol Wert, Garrett’s longtime girlfriend stated. “To think that a grown man killed a little girl, put her over the hillside over there, and then put a log on top of her to hide her body. Who does that? Who does that?”

Jeffrey Wogenstahl, the man found guilty of Amber’s murder, has been detained on Ohio’s death row since 1993. Wogenstahl now requested that the conviction be overturned. He claimed the state had not shown that he killed Amber in Ohio.

“It just brings everything back again,” Garrett stated. “It starts over from day one. Never was the question answered. Why?”

“I’m sorry, but there’s been no justice,” Wert stated. “I want to see him die. I actually want to see him die.”

On Tuesday morning, the Ohio Supreme Court will hear oral arguments from representatives of Wogenstahl and the prosecutor for Hamilton County.
