It could be time to shop if you don’t have auto insurance in Virginia. This is due to a new rule that will go into effect in Virginia on July 1st and require insurance for every car in the state.
“Driving without insurance is not a good thing,” Tom Brown of Mega Insurance Center stated. “People need protection. If someone gets in an accident with them, they need to have the person responsible’s insurance to help pay for the damage that is caused.”
The General Assembly enacted a bill in 2023 that terminated the DMV program that charged citizens $500 to register an uninsured car. The bill was then signed into law by Governor Glenn Youngkin (R), making it effective on July 1.
According to Brown, regardless of your culpability, your insurance carrier will typically pay for your damages if you are in an accident with an uninsured motorist.
“Perhaps that will lower the amount of frequency that we see people out there driving without insurance.” Brown stated. “Because, now, there is just no way around it.”

More than 6,000 Virginians, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles, currently pay the $500 fine for driving without insurance.
Brown advised them to look for a policy as quickly as possible, and he has some advice.
“Reach out to an independent agency, that’s my suggestion,” Brown stated. “Independent agencies have access to insurance markets that the general consumer doesn’t have. They can’t get to those markets unless they use an independent agency.”
If found using an unregistered car, offenders risk having their license suspended and paying fines exceeding $700.
