DOJ Report: Wisconsin Student's Pellet Rifle Pointing Leads to Fatal Encounter with Police

The Department of Justice in Wisconsin reports that outside a middle school, a student brandished a pellet weapon at the police, who then fired and killed the student.

An update on the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting outside Mount Horeb Middle School was made public on Saturday.

A little before 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the DOJ, someone saw someone approaching the middle school while carrying a backpack and “what appeared to be a long gun.”

They then contacted 911. A later confirmation by the state’s attorney general stated that the subject was a male student and a juvenile, but the name of the institution he attended was withheld.

When Mount Horeb Police Department officers arrived on the location, they discovered an individual who fit the description that had been submitted east of the main entrance to the school.

The teenager disobeyed the police’ orders to drop the firearm. At that point, the student allegedly brandished a weapon at the cops, who shot and killed him, according to the DOJ.

On the site, a Ruger pellet gun of the.177 caliber was found. According to officials, the student was never allowed to enter the school.

“No law enforcement officers or witnesses were physically injured during the incident,” the DOJ stated.

Body cameras were worn by the responding police officers during the shooting. They’re away on administrative leave. The multi-agency inquiry is being led by the Division of Criminal inquiry of the Wisconsin DOJ.

“DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Dane County District Attorney when the investigation concludes,” the DOJ stated.

About 25 miles to the west of Madison is Mount Horeb.
