SC Woman Receives Sentence for Newborn Daughter's Death

A 27-year-old mother who gave birth to her infant daughter in her car and then put her body in a trash bag will serve more than 20 years in jail.

Following her guilty plea to homicide by child abuse against her infant, Kimberly Taylor, Brennan Geller was sentenced to 22 years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections, according to a statement released by the South Carolina Solicitor’s Office for the 11th Circuit on Wednesday, May 8.

According to state legislation, Geller will not be qualified for parole.

As per the solicitor’s office, the deceased infant was discovered in Geller’s Jeep Laredo’s garbage bag by a family member in August 2018.

The discovery was reported to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department by the Lexington Medical Center, and an autopsy subsequently revealed that “air was present in the infant’s lungs, along with other indications of a live birth.”

Taylor was full term, according to the solicitor’s office, as the baby weighed seven pounds, six ounces and was born after 37 weeks of pregnancy.

After some research, it was discovered that Geller allegedly left work early on August 3, 2018, and proceeded to the parking lot. Prosecutors claim that almost nine hours after Geller searched “what to expect while in labor,” at around 10:35 a.m., she sought up “When do contractions stop?”

Geller, a Midlands Technical College student at the time, “secretly gave birth” in her car without the need for medical attention, according to investigators.

Geller “repeatedly denied her pregnancy to friends and acquaintances, including her boyfriend,” Edwin Taylor, according to the solicitor’s office. Geller allegedly told her partner that she was still working the night she gave birth, even though she had already gone.

Geller is said to have used scissors to cut the umbilical chord after giving birth and then placed her body in a trash bag. “Doctors would have testified at trial that suffocation could occur under these circumstances,” the solicitor’s office stated. The infant’s death was declared a homicide by the Lexington County Coroner.

Geller allegedly had difficulties after giving birth and needed to be treated at the Lexington Medical Center, where she first denied giving birth to medical personnel and an investigator.

Upon searching Geller’s Jeep, the police allegedly discovered towels and scissors that were used during Kimberly Taylor’s delivery. Medical professionals say the infant was healthy and did not appear to have any congenital problems, according to the solicitor’s office.

According to reports, Edwin Taylor stated during the sentencing hearing that he was unaware of his girlfriend’s pregnancy until the investigation. According to the prosecution, he battled for his father’s rights so that his daughter may be given a “proper burial.” The infant’s name is Edwin Taylor.

Edwin Taylor reportedly stated, “I was never given the opportunity to hold her in my arms; I only get to hold her in my heart. It breaks my heart knowing that she’s not here on earth right now with me making some of the childhood memories a father and daughter should be making at 5 years old.”
