After being taken from the sea at Coney Island Beach in New York City and taken to the hospital in critical condition, two youngsters did not make it through the night, according to the police.

Calls reporting three people in need of rescue in the sea near Coney Island in Brooklyn were received just after 8 p.m. on Friday, according to FDNY authorities. The two teenagers, a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old girl, were retrieved from the water after over an hour of searching.

In severe condition, both teenagers were taken to Coney Island Hospital.

Overnight, law enforcement sources verified that the teenagers, who were sisters, had passed away in the hospital. Their identities remained a secret.

Divers had been looking for a man who was still listed as missing in the water and was thought to be in his 20s. There isn’t a third swimmer missing, according to police later on.

The incident on Friday comes one month after two adolescent males drowned at New York City’s Jacob Riis Park, another renowned beach.

Concerns regarding the lethal occurrence have been highlighted by a recent spate of beach drownings caused by rip currents.

A couple from Pennsylvania and their six kids went on vacation to Florida, but they drowned after they got caught in a rip current while swimming at Stuart Beach. Last month, three men from Alabama perished at Florida’s Panama City Beach after becoming entangled in a rip current.

In order to escape a rip current, experts advise anyone trapped in one to remain cool, signal for assistance, and swim parallel to the coast rather than toward it.
